Social Media and real social change

I think social media has the potential to bring about real social change and has already done so in my opinion. For example social networks like Facebook and Twitter, with Facebook it allows you to have just about everyone in one place at a time from your significant other to a friend you made on your way home from school or work. Its almost replaces the way some people communicate with each other with wall posts and virtual ‘pokes’ also finding new friends in terms of going to social events and meeting new people instead there is a section on Facebook that show profiles of ‘people you may know’ who in other terms are completely random or someone you have not met before but you would still add them to converse. In other words some people are substituting their physical social skills to their virtual, online social skills, which could also become a problem where they would rely to much on technology to have simple person to person communication and can see that skill diminish. In terms of twitter there are various trends on a daily basis some started by very popular celebrities and can spread like wild fire. To sum up , social media does have the ability to bring about a real social change with the likes of Facebook and Twitter stemming from the way we interact with each other.
