I
think social media has the potential to bring about real social change and has
already done so in my opinion. For example social networks like Facebook and
Twitter, with Facebook it allows you to have just about everyone in one place
at a time from your significant other to a friend you made on your way home
from school or work. Its almost replaces the way some people communicate with
each other with wall posts and virtual ‘pokes’ also finding new friends in
terms of going to social events and meeting new people instead there is a
section on Facebook that show profiles of ‘people you may know’ who in other
terms are completely random or someone you have not met before but you would
still add them to converse. In other words some people are substituting their physical
social skills to their virtual, online social skills, which could also become a
problem where they would rely to much on technology to have simple person to
person communication and can see that skill diminish. In terms of twitter there
are various trends on a daily basis some started by very popular celebrities
and can spread like wild fire. To sum up , social media does have the ability
to bring about a real social change with the likes of Facebook and Twitter stemming from the way we interact with each other.
This is a good blog but I think it just states the social media have changed the way we communicated to each other but not specificity on what changes to the society. The way of our communication is just one side of the society. There are still some other aspects of society such as culture, education, political etc.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you and to add to your point of being able to have everything in one place at one time, the technology that is offered today even allows us to access the applications literally everywhere we are because they are on our cell phones and our cell phones are able to have Wi-Fi and internet all the time now. It definitely replaces the way that people talk to each other and in this instance i think our society is taking step backward because often we lose the personal-ness of the conversation. Also tone is not as easily understood in writing, texts and written messages as opposed to oral communication. However, I do think that this application of sending text messages and emails does make life a lot easier in a lot of circumstances such as when you have a quick short question or you need to be brief or send direction to look at later etc. I also think that the lack of face to face contact allows for people to take time to construct their message which means that they can either have more time to think before they speak in a negative or positive way. I think this creates potential for a lot of bullying but at the same time allows people to get across exactly what they want which a lot of people use this for good.
